1. Community Needs Assessment with windshield survey (25%) –
Community Assessment is fundamental to the practice of Community Health.
It is an essential first step in community practice as it involves identifying, understanding, and interpreting community needs. Conducting a community needs assessment can be a vital aspect of a community health course for a baccalaureate nursing student. This experience can enable the student to use the nursing process in a basic community assessment as well as provide community decision makers with significant data and analysis about community health related needs and potential solutions.
The community assessment is a “windshield survey” of eight community subsystems: physical environment, health and social services, economics, safety and transportation, politics and government, communication, education, and recreation with the purpose of identifying the community nursing role regarding the needs of the population assessed. Students can choose a zip code, community, or municipality. Each community assessment will be responsible for the survey that includes: a virtual walk-through assessment of the community, evidence of the strengths/weaknesses/resources (city websites, community health departments, census data), nursing diagnosis, and proposed community interventions. Your results will be presented in a 5-10 page report. All assignments will be graded according to the criteria provided, submitted via Blackboard and comply with APA style and format (APA 7th edition manual). Would prefer a community in Miami but open to the writers choice.
