Shermont et al., (2009) discuss how career planning is an important professional development skill that empowers nurses to chart their own professional path and take responsibility for their career. Career planning is a process that requires you to assess your home and work environments, as well as strengths and limitations, a personal career vision and realistic plan for the future (Shermont et al, 2009).
In the pursuit of my MSN I struggled in which direction to go. My first instinct was to do what others had been doing which was to become an NP. The more I thought about pursuing my MSN as an NP the more I questioned it. Through research I found that pursuing an MSN as a Nurse Executive made more sense in regards to physical workload, finances, and work hours that would be more of a benefit to myself and family.
An MSN leadership and management program prepares nurses to pursue leadership positions and become a role model and mentor for other nurses and a force for better patient outcomes (Walden University). Brandt et al., (2012) provides details that a nurse executive has an important role to participate in promoting a shared decision-making process for the nursing staff.Allowing room for staff nurses to be involved in decision making, brings forth a good rapport and makes an impact on their work environment and the organization’s health care mission (Brandt et al.,2012).
It’s important to look for memberships in organizations that will meet your professional and personal goals. By becoming familiar with its mission you will know if that organization is a good fit for you (Echevarria, 2018).
The American Organization of Nursing Leadership (AONL) is a professional organization that is affiliated with my specialty. AONL shows support to nurse leaders through contributions to the nursing profession, facilitates high quality outcomes, and supports the staff (AONL, 2015)). In order to become a member you must be a nurse leader and you can register online on which membership status you prefer to join and it can be for one or two years. Through the AONL membership, âyou can enhance your professional development and education, build your network and acquire the tools you need to be an effective leaderâ (AONL, 2015).
