Critique
the theory of Self-Efficacy using the internal and external criticism
evaluation process.
I f we need to define self-
efficacy, we would say that is the judgment of each one capability to organize
and execute a course of action. Peterson & Bredow, (2019). The
self-efficacy theory is the assumption that people can exercise influence of
what they do. Bandura (1997), propose that through reflective thought, the
generative use of knowledge and skills to perform a specific behavior, and
other tools can influence a person decide the way to behave.
Self-evaluation or the ability to compare individual output in
some sort of evaluative criterium is needed to determine self-efficacy. And it
is this comparison process that allows an individual to make a judgment
performance of its capabilities and establish his or her own self-efficacy
expectations. Peterson & Bredow, (2019).
Now that we stablish what it is self- efficacy theory, lets
evaluate this middle range theory using the internal and external criticism
evaluation process.
The internal criticism evaluates how completely does this theory
address the topic it aims to address, and if there are holes that need to be
filled with others works. In this case, Self-efficacy theory is situation
specific. It is difficult, therefore, to generalize an individual’s
self-efficacy from one type of behavior to another. But on the other side,
clearly states the main components, and it is easy to be understood. Also, it
is consistent addressing and maintaining definitions of the key concepts, and
it has a congruent use of terms, interpretations and principles. There was
consistently a strong association between self-efficacy and the stated health
behavior. Future nursing research needs to focus on the degree to which
specific self-efficacy behaviors can be generalized and to which degree is
self-efficacy a dimension of individual humanness, distinct for each person,
but consistent across a range of related behaviors for one person, Peterson
& Bredow, (2019).
If now we analize the external criticism, first we should pay
attention to the complexity of this theory, and if it can be easily understood.
This theory doesn’t have too many variables, so it is pretty broad, but anyhow
it is able to produce hipotheses that lead to results in the area of nursisng
that addresses providing elaborate explanations for the reason why people
behave the way they do, which is important when dealing with different patients
Baruth & Schlaff, (2017). Most of all, the pragmatism of the theory has
enhanced its level of efficiency as an effective patient management tool. The
theory, in this case, has proven to be instrumental in changing the general
outcome of the patient management process. This theory underlying assumptions
ring true as well, and is prangmaticly operationalized in real-life settings.
Measurement of self-efficacy and outcome expectations requires the development
of valid and reliable, situation-specific scales (Gruber-Baldini, Velozo,
Romero, & Shulman, 2017) Lastly, this theory have a true impact in how
nurses carry out nursing interventions.
