This is the assignment prompt for your final paper for our Issues in Sex and Gender class. Your paper
must be 1000-1250 words (double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman) and must be uploaded to
the submission folder on our courseâs D2L page entitled âFinal Paperâ by midnight June 12. Your
paper must be submitted either as a word.doc or pdf file. No other formats will be accepted, and no
submission per email will be accepted.
You will write an argumentative paper on the topic of your choosing. A successful final paper will
draw from one or more authors to make a sustained argument in favor of your position. In your
paper, you will be arguing for a position, either critical or supportive of one or more given authors
that we read in this class. By citing the relevant texts, you will explain the arguments under
consideration and give the reader good reasons to agree with your position.
That is, in your paper you will advance a clear thesis statement and argue for it. A thesis
statement should express a clear claim. It should also be a claim that not everyone can be
expected to agree with. In constructing your essay, you must draw on at least one thinker whose
texts we have read throughout the quarter. In each case you must: 1. cite specific claims or
arguments made by the authors; 2. explain the claims or arguments on their own terms; and
3. make clear the relevance of these points in terms of your own argument.
Your paper must also have a clear structure, with an introduction (which includes a thesis
statement and a road map for what you will argue in your paper); a body divided into paragraphs,
where each paragraph makes a point, and where the different paragraphs are logically linked
together; and a conclusion, which briefly restates your thesis statement and how you have argued
for it in your paper.
It is much easier (and more fun!) to write a paper on something that you care about. Try thinking
about what excited you in the texts we have read; what topics and questions were interesting or
controversial in the class discussions; which arguments or texts opened up new ways of thinking for
you or you found yourself disagreeing with strongly. Use those reactions to fuel your writing. In
addition to substantially engage at least one thinker whose work we have read throughout the
quarter, you can also incorporate insights from other sources, including art works and films.
