The goal of this series of assignments (EBP Scoping Exercise and Paper) is to ask and critically answer a question relevant to the nurse educator or nurse executive role. You will write the paper in two phases where you develop a PICO question based on an exercise and where you will scope the literature and then search, appraise and synthesize the best available evidence in order to make provisional recommendations based on the appraisal and synthesis of the evidence. During the Phase I scoping exercise, you laid the groundwork for the Phase II EBP paper. You’ll continue developing the same manuscript, meaning that you can reuse any part of the scoping exercise that is relevant. In this stage, you will practice the steps that are typical of a systematic review. You should not consider this an authentic systematic review, but you will use some of the same skills—thorough, structured advanced searching, appraisal, extraction of data and synthesis of the evidence in order to make provisional recommendations (answers) to the question and make recommendations for advanced practice nursing and for research.
You’ll develop a detailed structured search of your PICO question developed during the Phase I search exercise. You will select three articles that represent the most relevant and strongest evidence. You will extract the details and results to create a pinch table of findings, identifying the strengths and limitations of the best available evidence you found. You will synthesize the findings from the appraised studies and discuss the implications of these findings as they apply to patient care and advanced nursing practice. In this discussion section you will make recommendations and support your recommendations based on your appraisal of the strength and quality of the evidence.

An annotated template – Use this to start your paper. I’ve included in italics a description of what to do in each section. Evaluation will be based upon:
Alignment of your question and methods
Logic of the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the search
Sensitivity and specificity of the search
Transparency and logic of your detailed structured search, including justification of the selected databases
Alignment of standardized critical appraisal tools with selected evidence
Justification of appraisal of selected research
Coherence of linking appraisal with levels of evidence
Logic and completeness of “pinch/extraction table”
Appropriateness of levels of recommendations and clinical implications
Clarity and style of writing (including adherence to APA rules).
All papers should be typed and written in standard paragraph form according to APA format (7th Ed.).
