This project will involve you watching a film from the approved list below that depicts someone in recovery from a mental illness. The goal of the project is to analyze the main character of the film and write about the following topics:
Describe what it means to you to be “strengths-focused”, and then describe the main character using a strengths-focus.
What do you think was the person’s psychiatric diagnosis? Define the terms “positive symptom” and “negative symptom” and then describe the main character’s positive/negative symptoms.
What trauma (if any) did the character experience? What role (if any) did trauma play in the person’s story?
Define what treatment means, and then describe the types of treatment the person used. What else could have they have tried?
Define what rehabilitation means, and then describe the rehabilitation supports that the person used and/or could have used for recovery. Hint: Think about the “supported” programs we talked about during the second half of the semester (employment, education, housing, etc.).
Describe why family and other natural supports are important components of recovery. What role did family and natural supports play for this person and their recovery?
What would you say recovery from a mental illness means to this person?
Describe what the terms ‘stigma’ and ‘person-first language’ mean to someone with a mental illness. Were there any stigmatizing beliefs/attitudes about mental illness that you noticed in the film? What about violations of person-first language, were there any that you noticed in the film?
As a psych rehab practitioner, what does it mean to have a valued social role? What were the valued social roles that were instrumental to this person’s recovery?
