From the Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Core Competencies, the competencies I chose were Quality Improvement and Evidence-based practice. Both competencies are essential for me because the need for quality and proven health care is continuously an area to improve. While continuing education, demonstrating an understanding of improvement is crucial. “Most importantly, students new to the direct patient care role learn that the quality of the care they provide for every patient really matters. As a result, students can either contribute directly to the decline in the nursing quality indicators or contribute to their improvement” (Fater & Ready, 2011). These two competencies complement each other well. I believe they both help us form a patient-focused model that is truly in the patient’s best interest. Proving competency in these areas will provide a framework for positive change in the workplace. Evidence-based practice is a core competency that provides an understanding of the importance of implementing EBP. “Having a clear and operational definition of EBP competence will assist in the sustainment of a healthcare delivery system that effectively employs EBP. Ultimately, this will help nurses demonstrate competence in EBP to maximize their patients’ outcomes and improve the quality of care they provide” (Laibhen-Parkes, 2014)
The essential I chose from AACN BSN was Essential VI: Interprofessional Communication and Collaboration for Improving Patient Health Outcomes. This is described as communication among healthcare professionals is critical to delivering high-quality and safe patient care. I believe communicating professionally with the interprofessional team is the key to quality care. I have personally witnessed both effective and ineffective communication in the workplace, and the patient is the one that suffers from the lack of this essential mostly. There is also the frustration as a part of the interprofessional team that results from not feeling as if you have a voice worthy of being heard, and this affects us all. “By embracing differences and improving communication amongst the disciplines, the healthcare workforce will advance.” (Foronda et al., 2016).
