Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis in the older adults that materializes when the protective cartilage that shields the ends of the joints in the hands, knees spine and hips wears down over time (Mayo Clinic, 2021). In other words it can be termed as the unusual remodeling of joints tissues brought about by different types of infections within the affected joint (Medscape, 2021). The pathological interpretation of the changes that occur in the OA joints comprises of wearing down of the articular cartilage, thickening of the subchondral bone, formation of the osteophyte, degeneration of ligaments and hypertrophy of the joint capsule.
What is the role of osteophytes in OA?
Osteophyte are the most accurate radiographic makers in the advanced stage for OA. Marginal osteophytes in some studies have shown to improve stability in the joints and also help in the redistribution of forces that bring about evenly protection of the articular cartilage, but in large amount, osteophyte reduce the function of the knee joint (Markhardt et al., 2018).
How do NSAIDS affect OA?
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are generally used to treat pain by helping to suppress painful inflammation and joint damage. NSAIDS are purported to block the synthesis of cartilage matrix that may encourage the development of OA (MEDPAGE, 2021).
How does weight loss affect OA?
When a person is overweight and they loss just a few pounds, they release some bit of pressure that is exerted on the knee and in turn relieving some arthritis pain from the knees. The other benefit is that losing weight lowers protein levels in the body that results in swelling created by fat cells (Griffin, 2017).
