Goal:
investigate PTSD from the perspective of conditioning and extinction and to
write about possible treatments, their brain bases and effectiveness so far.
Barak
served in the special forces of the IDF and participated in the last operation
in Gaza. He witnessed many brutal battles and sadly saw many of his friends
wounded or killed. He has PTSD and suffers from immense fear and anxiety when
subject to loud noises and/or flashing lights. He recently attended a barbeque
with friends and family for Israel Independence Day, where a fireworks display caused
him to have an anxiety attack. Barak reaches out to you and asks you for your
help.
Explain how the fear and
anxiety he experiences has developed according to the material we have covered
on conditioning.
2. It has been years since he
was in the battle, why does his fear response continue when nothing threatening
follows the loud noises and/or flashing lights? Specifically, why doesn’t
extinction happen?
3. Look in the literature (scientific
publication) to find alternate treatments for PTSD. Briefly explain the
findings.
