Write a short (approximately 3-5 page research project for this course. The Office for Civil Rights enforces the HIPAA Privacy Rule, which protects the privacy of individually identifiable health information; the HIPAA Security Rule, which sets national standards for the security of electronic protected health information; and the confidentiality provisions of the Patient Safety Rule, which protect identifiable information being used to analyze patient safety events and improve patient safety.
The medical office in which you work received a complaint alleging an employee failed to obtain a written consent prior to releasing HIV results to a patient’s relative. Your paper should discuss a brief history of HIPAA and the privacy rule and an overview of the consequences of divulging such information. How can a breach effect all parties involved, including the person who divulged the information, the person whose privacy was breached, the physician and facility as a whole. Examples: fines, punishment, loss of employment, discrimination, etc.
