You’re a researcher!
Write a research proposal on two aspects of child and adolescent development that you would like to study. Identify which variable is your predictor variable (independent) and which is your outcome variable (dependent), then develop a research question based on your two variables. For example, if I want to know if birth order affects personality development, my predictor variable is birth order and my outcome variable is personality. My research question would be, “Does birth order have an effect on personality development?”
Do a literature review and provide a paragraph or two on why these two variables may be related according to current research (Please feel free to use your midterm and the article you analyzed in your literature review). Lastly provide a hypothesis (i.e. birth order will be related to personality or birth order will not be related to personality).
Then design your study.
Make sure to consider the following questions:
Who will be your study participants (children, adolescents, adults)? What demographics are important for your sample? Does race matter? What about socioeconomic status? How old should they be? Is where/how they grew up relevant? How will you obtain your sample?
What methods will you use to collect your data? Observation (Laboratory or Naturalistic?), surveys and interviews, standardized tests, case study, or physiological measures? You can absolutely use more than one of these.
Is your research design descriptive, correlational, or experimental? (If it is experimental, be sure to identify your independent and dependent variables and your experimental and control groups). Why is this design best for what you are trying to study? What can you assume from the results from this kind of study?
What is the time span of your research? Will you use a cross-sectional approach or a longitudinal approach and why?
How would you interpret your results? Does your sample alter how you can interpret them? For example, if your sample is entirely college students from one university, can you make assumptions about the entire population of the world based on your results?
Lasty, talk about the implications of the study. Why would it be important for psychologists to have the information that your results provide? What would it do for people?
The writing assignment will have to be completed in APA 7 format with a title page, in-text citations, and a reference page. You will need to have a minimum of 3 peer-reviewed references (more is always better). Remember: You must cite any information you present in your paper!
