While it may seem that doing the right thing the right way for the right patient at all times should be second nature, many times making a change from “doing it the way it has always been done” to “basing nursing care on evidence” can be difficult. Known as “sacred cows,” there are some healthcare workers who hold on to old practices believing they are the best approach to patient care and resist making change. As a new nurse, you will be faced with these types of individuals. Maintaining a focus on questioning current practice and keeping current with changes to nursing care in your practice setting is important. Vocalizing evidence-based changes and guiding others to question their nursing practice can help to shift the culture from “sacred cows” to nursing care based on current best available evidence.
