Strategies for Advocacy
Nursing theories have been developed and implemented by nurse theorists to enhance the development of nursing practice. These theories include policies, beliefs, and procedures nurses follow or propose that enable nurses to provide optimum and quality healthcare to patients. Professional nurses in their work environment practice advocacy of several aspects to ensure quality nursing practice. They include advocacy of nursing theories which can be about patients, healthcare professionals, or any other healthcare-related aspect (Abbasinia et al., 2020).
There are various strategies a professional nurse can implement at work to enhance or improve quality nursing practice. Nurses are accustomed to advocating for patients and their families towards solving the problem associated with the health problem. Eventually, enabling patients to act in terms of their best interests. Advocacy strategies have been conceptualized using a useful framework such as a framework formulated by Jack Rothman, he outlined three types of policy advocacy which include social action, social planning, and locality development (Barbour et al., 2018).
The framework of locality development denotes energizing the interests of patients and mobilizing resources around the problem affecting the patient. To practice this strategy the nurse should have skills in mediation, coalition building, communications, program development, and organization. For example, a community health nurse can work with the community residents and local authorities or organizations to monitor, evaluate and safeguard the quality of the community’s water for drinking to avoid water-borne diseases in the region.
Another strategic framework is social planning, which denotes consensus on the problem’s nature. The strategy entails the determination of the technology that is the most cost-effective or determination of the optimal distribution of a resource that is scarce in the area of work for achieving the most recommended outcome. Such a strategy involves an inter-disciplinary approach of collaboration between the nurse and other healthcare professionals such as physicians, epidemiologists, and pharmacists.
For example, a community nurse might plan for a program to address an outbreak of Covid-19 viral infection. In collaboration with other workers, they can help in planning and carrying out epidemiological studies and survey to identify and characterize the problem, evaluate the effects of interventions, plan a risk communication strategy, and test design and procedures remediation. Patients are consulted and kept informed about a particular problem and the best possible nursing interventions. If an error occurs it’s rationally solved in the patient’s interest and the best opinion of the nurse (Abbasinia et al., 2020).
Another strategic framework is an action applied in critical situations or serious health problems affecting patients. Therefore, advocacy and value-based allegiance are employed. For example, a community nurse can conclude that a local manufacturing plant is emitting toxic fumes and poisonous leaks in the environment, thus affecting residents’ respiratory and gastrointestinal functioning. The next step of the nurse might be to report to the regulatory authority to take appropriate action otherwise people’s heath is at risk of chronic diseases.
Other strategic actions the community nurse can employ include helping to organize protest demonstrations and rallies, lobbying for stronger public health policies, assisting the residents to explore legal actions against the industry, and asking for support from other healthcare professionals on how to prevent the industry from polluting water and air to the community area, and advising the community activist on how to document the problem and its consequences to the community (Villalonga-Olives et al., 2018).
There are many strategies a professional nurse can use to advocate for nursing theories depending on the role of the nurse. Other strategies can be irrational, obstructive, and unhelpful to people such as contests or campaign strategies therefore they need to be avoided depending on the type of specialization of the nurse.
