Incivility, violence, and bullying in the
workplace are hot issues in nursing, with bullying and incivility
prevalent in all settings. According to Yoder-Wise (2018), incivility and
bullying have become widespread in nursing education as well as clinical
settings. Nursing has reported an increase in the number of incidents of
incivility in the last quarter resulting in a decrease in job
satisfaction. You have been tasked with presenting to the administration
why this type of behavior in the workplace should be resolved. The ANA states
any form of violence, from any source, should not be tolerated in the nursing
profession, and employers and nurses must adopt evidence-based strategies that
avert and lessen workplace violence, bullying, and incivility; and promote
wellness, safety, health, and best possible outcomes in health care.
Inpatient and outpatient settings and schools of nursing are
required to provide a safe practice environment where nurses do not encounter
workplace violence (Cherly, 2019).
Self-care is an important aspect of nursing. Selfcare
remains vital for nurses to ease the detrimental effects of stress in the
constantly and rapidly changing health care environment and to prevent the
progression of those effects to burnout, which can have devastating
consequences for nurses and those under their care. With the growing interest
in whole-person–centered care, nursing leaders in healthcare organizations are
paying more attention to cultivating practice environments that support the
self-care of the nurses. You have been tasked to develop a self-care
initiative in your hospital for nurses (Halm, 2019)
Several independent studies have shown that an increase in
the number of RNs holding at least a BSN degree decreases the risk of patient
mortality. With such strong evidence that more education leads to better
patient outcomes, the facility has moved to require that all RNs
have a BSN degree. Approximately 70% of the current staff have a
BSN or higher. You have been tasked to present this new requirement to
the nurses on your unit. Include a plan to assist current nurses in
obtaining the advanced degree and why the hospital requires this of the nurses.
