Considering legislation and quality improvement measures, what challenges do you see on the horizon for strategic planning, and how would you meet them as a manager?
Strategic planning implementation in most organizations is the process by which companies determine its future overall direction and defines the actions that will shape it. The leaders and staff within the organization, those we know as the stakeholders, gather information about the Strategic planning, and work the plan to develop objectives and techniques for measuring ongoing performance.
As leaders in strategic planning focus on the process flows involving their plan, they must be attentive to how legislation impacts day to day patient care. Some challenges pertain to problems involving insurance coverage and payment for each patient—commercial or public sector. The challenges for healthcare strategic plans will be their ability to keep current with the ongoing trends in the nation’s health insurance marketplace due to actions at the federal level; especially the legislative branch. Healthcare leaders have had to adjust their strategic plans and quality programs due to federal legislation such as the passage and implementation of the Affordable Care Act, (ACA) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regulatory initiatives, The challenges here will be for pharmacist leaders and other clinicians to broaden their roles on health care teams and, potentially, their scope of practice through these various ACA-mandated initiatives.
Additional challenges pertain to the extent to which clinicians, including pharmacists, engage in activities that support patient care and that are congruent with the aims of the ACA and CMS guidelines. My focus as a manager would be to determine the likelihood of success in avoiding regulatory or legal dilemmas regarding reimbursements or standards of practice.
