Week 2 Discussion
Research and publications regarding nursing theories conducted many years ago have laid a foundation for nursing in modern times (Roy, 2018). Nursing theories are concepts that are knowledge-based and organized to help define the scope of nursing practice. Not only do these nursing theories provide a framework to guide nursing practice, but they also provide foundational knowledge and understanding that allows nurses to care for patients. Therefore, nursing theories are essential to the nursing profession. Without nursing theories, nursing would lack structure and emphasis on caring, compassion, and holistic, person-centered care.
Nursing theories are just as important to nurse practitioner practice as they are to general nursing practice. Whether it is bedside or in community nursing, nursing theories have a place in daily practice. Nursing theory-guided practice improves patient care and patient outcomes (Younas, Quennell 2019). It also allows providers to express what they do for individuals and the reasons they do it. Understanding and embracing nursing models and concepts help us in our advanced practice to not only understand our role but also to apply critical thinking and guide our actions in different situations to promote the best outcomes.
