this is the Discussion:
Nursing as a science is constantly evolving and discovering new ways to improve patient care and the standard of care. Research is the tool to make this improvement possible. Different methodologies exist in research, and each brings excellent value to the healthcare investigation; they have, at the same time, multiple similarities and differences. The method used depends on the purpose of the investigation and the problem to be solved. Quantitative and Qualitative methods allow researchers to obtain new information and data, making it easier to analyze and interpret this data into new content. The approach to be selected by the investigator depends on the purpose of the research and what questions and problems the researcher is looking to solve.
The quantitative method is used to probe a hypothesis created by the investigator, and the result could be H0; there is no correlation between the factors and variables, or H1, meaning there is some correlation between them. This method is more objective and systemic, based on what investigators perceive and deduct from the data collected; It measures the information to establish a cause-and-effect relationship. There are four types of quantitative research: descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, and experimental; each of them supports the next one and is used depending on the controls, variables, and sample size. The success of this methodology depends on the discipline and consistency of the researcher, the most common error found are inadequate samples and design, biases, and extraneous variables, among others.
The qualitative method is more subjective and analyzes real-life experiences and human behaviors, culture, and customs; it does not look for a correlation between cause and effect, and it counts on the intuition of the investigators. The qualitative method allows the researcher to determine patterns of human behavior under certain conditions and socio-environmental interactions. Qualitative research plays an important role in subjects like psychology, health promotion, sociology, etc.
Both methods are the cornerstone of healthcare research; it takes a retrospective and prospective view to develop new protocols of treatment; it maintains updates and provides the base for future investigations. Researchers are capable to use this data to evaluate current studies, create empiric treatments, and improve behavioral therapies. Research methodology applied to the nursing process has opened the door to infinitive possibilities, updates in sterile procedures, skill nursing protocols, and improvement of patient perception of health promotion and prevention, etc.
