Introduction
The level of happiness in society is psychologically important. Communities with high levels of satisfaction tend to be more competitive and prosperous than societies with low levels of happiness. Social media has become a part of life today, and there is an interesting correlation between using social media and being happier. To demonstrate how important, it is for people to be happy in life, social media will be the variable and claim that “People who use social media are less happy than people who do not use social media.” This assignment aims to show the relationship between two variables measured by social observation. The independent variable is social media use, and the dependent variable is happiness. This research will establish a relationship between x (using social media) and y (happiness).
Thesis Statement: People who use social media are less happy than people who do not use social media.
Problem Statement
Though many factors contribute to happiness, many people use social media to interact with friends and loved ones, express themselves, and receive information from others. Therefore, it would be logical to assume that the more a person uses social media, the less happy they are because they may become dependent on their phone or computer for communication instead of speaking directly with others regularly. However, the theory has not been proven by research, and the present study will aim to provide evidence of this Relationship (Twenge, 2019).
Research Question
a) Does social media use lead to unhappiness?
Hypothesis and Null Hypothesis
H1: Social media use is positively correlated with happiness
H0: Social media use is not positively correlated with happiness
Independent and Dependent Variables
The Independent Variable will be Social Media Use (X) because people use different social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Skype. The Dependent Variable is Happiness (Y), which is based on their scores on a scale of 1 to 10.
Measurement Instrument
The measurement instrument will be an observation in society. The observation will include the variables Social Media Use (X) and Happiness (Y). The observation will be based on how often people use social media for an average of 15 minutes during one week. In order to obtain a measurement score for X, people will be asked when they use social media. This result can then be divided by 15 minutes to get a percentage representing how much people spent their time using social media this week. The same is true for Y, but instead of using social media, they will be asked how happy they are on a scale of 1 to 10. This will be the score from which to draw the correlation (Chae, 2018).
Research Design
The research design will involve an observational field study in society. A case study will be conducted by observing and interviewing 10 people who use social media regularly and 10 others who do not. Interviews and observations of everyday people do the data collection because this method is more practical than an experimental study where variables like time, place and other factors that may affect the results would have to be controlled in this experiment. The sample for this study will be randomly selected people in society. There will be no criteria for who will participate in this experiment. The data from 20 selected participants will be collected and analyzed based on the criteria.
Data Collection Procedure
The data collection procedure will involve finding participants in society and gaining consent by interviewing them. Each participant will be asked the main research question: “People who use social media are less happy than people who do not use social media.” There will also be a control question to measure how happy they are: “How happy are you in your life on a scale of 1-10?”. Each participant will then be shown a scale that shows the ranking of happiness in life. This will be marked on a scale of 1 to 10.
Data Representation
To represent the data as desired, an Excel spreadsheet will be used with data-entry sheets for each variable like social media use (X), Happiness (Y), and Cronbach’s Alpha for reliability (R). This way, the variables all have different characteristics, allowing them to be reliable measures of the dependent variable, Happiness (Tavakol & Dennick, 2011). The significant correlation coefficient is also represented on this sheet: Cronbach’s Alpha, which represents reliability on a scale from .50 to .70.
Limitations
There are several limitations to this study. Some of these include cultural differences, technology level, language barriers, and not covering every age group in society. The sample size is also very small since there are only 20 participants. This may limit the reliability of the results because the sample group could be biased and predisposed to a certain viewpoint before or during the interview process. This could lead them to respond based on their viewpoint of social media use versus happiness.
Teaches notes on the paper
Dr. STEWART
Hi Seth- Please be sure to use a validated measurement instrument (from the list provided in the research paper instructions) to measure the dependent variable for your study. Be sure not to use a self-made survey such as the one you mentioned in your data collection procedure “How Happy are you in your life on a scale o 1-10”. For this variable, you should be using the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire as listed in the assignment instructions.
