In this unit, you will distinguish the tasks and activities that are performed during each phase of the systems development life cycle (SDLC). You will also learn that there are many similarities between the project management life cycle (PMLC) process and the SDLC process. You will discover that there are also many, many different life cycle phases for each of these frameworks; however, they all have similar goals and deliverables.
For this course, you will use a five-phase SDLC, (planning, analysis, design/development, implementation, and evaluation) and a five-phase project management life cycle (initiation, planning, implementation, evaluation, and closure). Each project will have unique tasks, roles, and responsibilities, so it is important that you follow a structured method of organizing and tracking all aspects of a systems project.
Informatics nurses (INs) and informatics nurse specialists (INSs) apply informatics knowledge and skills in the areas of a system development life cycle (SDLC). Graduate-level INSs are particularly well prepared for planning the process for an SDLC. They have the knowledge, skills, and competencies to effectively assume the role of project manager by facilitating interprofessional communication, managing change, and coordinating the process of implementation. Whether the project is small (e.g., departmental) or very large (e.g., system-wide), INSs are central to the success of a health information system project. Careful planning is involved using project management techniques, such as a task/timeline for all phases of an SDLC using a Gantt chart format.
SCENARIO
You recently earned your master’s degree in nursing informatics and have been hired as an informatics nurse specialist at a midsize rural hospital. Diabetes and high blood pressure are growing public health problems in underserved populations living in excess of 45 minutes from the hospital. Much of the population does not have access to the internet. In an effort to improve access to healthcare services and increase patient accountability in patient-physician interactions, your organization is considering the integration of a telehealth program. Your hospital currently has a modern EHR in place that allows integration across ambulatory care offices associated with the organization. As the team lead, you have been asked to identify a telehealth system that addresses the needs of your community and is compatible with your hospital’s current system.
You must deliver a Gantt chart to your hospital executive leadership that arranges all the major subtasks in each of the five major phases of your SDLC (i.e., planning, analysis, design/development, implementation, and evaluation). You must complete your Gantt chart using the Microsoft Visio software, Excel, or an equivalent drawing tool. Instructions for downloading and using Microsoft Visio are provided in Web Links below. If you are using a different diagramming tool, you will need to find and use instructions for the tool you select. You will also present your approach to planning the SDLC to your hospital executive leadership.
Part 1: Gantt Chart Creation
A. Create a Gantt chart outlining the full SDLC of the integration of your hospital’s new telehealth system that includes each of the following:
• five phases of an SDLC
• five major sub-tasks within each phase of the SDLC
• specific start dates, finish dates, and task durations for each subtask
• designated resource name
• task dependencies indicated with arrows
• one milestone event in each phase of an SDLC.
Note: Submit your Gantt in PDF format. Make sure to save it in both the original and PDF formats in case edits are needed.
Part 2: Presentation to Executive Leadership
Using Panopto, record yourself presenting your approach to planning the SDLC to the hospital’s executive leadership. The video should be approximately 20 minutes.
Note: For instructions on how to access and use Panopto, use the “Panopto How-To Videos” web link provided below. To access Panopto’s website, navigate to the web link titled “Panopto Access”, and then choose to log in using the “WGU” option. If prompted, log in using your WGU student portal credentials, and then it will forward you to Panopto’s website.
To submit your recording, upload it to the Panopto drop box titled “Informatics Systems and Design Analysis- MVP2 / C798.” Once the recording has been uploaded and processed in Panopto’s system, retrieve the URL of the recording from Panopto and copy and paste it into the Links option. Upload the remaining task requirements using the Attachments option.
B. Create a presentation (length of approximately 20 minutes) of your proposed approach to planning the SDLC to the hospital’s executive leadership by doing the following:
1. Create a multimedia presentation (e.g., Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple Keynote) (length of 10–15 slides) for your hospital’s executive leadership that includes the Gantt chart from part A and explains your SDLC approach. Include presenter notes.
2. Justify in your multimedia presentation a detailed explanation for your inclusion of the five subtasks, task owners, timeline, and milestone event in each of the following phases of the SDLC:
• planning
• analysis
• design/development
• implementation
• evaluation
3. Explain in your multimedia presentation to the hospital’s executive leadership how the subtasks of your Gantt chart address the following:
• key data elements that support your organization’s clinical research initiatives
• compliance with federal and other regulations
• the integration of ergonomics and environmental health
4. Discuss in your multimedia presentation to the hospital’s executive leadership the potential impact of the new telehealth system on three of the following entities:
• healthcare consumers
• families
• communities
• resources
• networks
• healthcare organizations
5. Provide a link to an audiovisual recording of you delivering your presentation using the Panopto system that incorporates your multimedia presentation.
Note: The audiovisual recording should feature you visibly presenting the material (i.e., not in voiceover or embedded video) and should simultaneously capture both you and your multimedia presentation.
a. Demonstrate the following in your audiovisual presentation:
• professionalism
• confidence
• strong and clear communication and presentation skills
• efficient use of time
C. Incorporate the following components of APA style and formatting in your paper:
• bias-free language
• APA-specific rules regarding verb tense, voice, and perspective
• a title page and headers
• in-text citations and references
• APA-specific formatting rules for margins, spacing, numbering, and indentation for the title page and main body of your paper, including headers, bulleted and numbered lists, and tables and figures
D. Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission.
