Types of Dementia [WLOs: 1, 2, 4] [CLOs: 1, 4, 5]
Aging brings with it a myriad of changes to the physical, mental, and social status of the elderly population. The brain in the elderly is more prone to cognitive changes than that of the young. The brain begins its aging process in the mid- to late thirties. Many young adults are unaware of this fact. Dementia inhibits the brain from processing and storing information; it is not a normal part of the aging process. It is a disease of the brain that causes memory and cognition impairment. The fear of memory loss and detachment from family and friends brings about anxiety, depression, distrust, and fear of harm (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Fields, 2019). Some elderly fear that medications will cause a lack of control of bodily and motor nerve function.
Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapter 6 and 10 in your textbook. Also review the UC Davis’ Dimsdale-Zucker (2018) article Using virtual reality to identify brain areas involved in memory (Links to an external site.) on areas of the brain involved in memory, read “Where Is Dementia?” A Systematic Literature Review Exploring Neuroanatomical Aspects of Dementia (Links to an external site.), and explore the Alzheimer’s Society About Dementia (Links to an external site.) webpage.
Address the following in your initial post:
Assess the behaviors associated with three types of dementia.
Create a plan on how you would care for a person with dementia of your choice. This individual may be hypothetical or someone you know. If the person is someone you know please ensure that there is no identifying information for the individual. You must not include any names, addresses, initials, relationship to you, etc. You may refer to the person as “Person A”; “Person B”; “Person C”; “Person D”; etc. Be sure to include the following:
Discuss two important hygiene care.
Discuss two activities that are best suited for this person.
Discuss one safety strategy for this person.
