What are your goals for practicum?
My goal for the first day is to just soak it all. I want to
get acquainted with the staff and office procedures. By the end of the
session, I would like to feel more confident in my abilities to
facilitate my own patient interaction with my preceptor as a guide only
when I feel I need it. I want to be able to have a basic documentation
format solidified by the end of the term. I plan to use the clinical
skills checklist to guide my encounters. I will check off each
experience and make an effort to be involved in the care of each
procedure/skill, patient encounter.
Discuss Your Feelings About Starting Your First Practicum
I have pondered on this question quite a bit while waiting
for this class. I believe the expectation to be self-sufficient in the
responsibility of a patient is anxiety worth. I do feel like I have a
good foundation of critical thinking, knowledge, and clinical
undergraduate experience to help support my growth. I believe that is
will be a leap of expectations required to be met during practicum.
Qualities that may be similar are the need for critical thinking,
clinical judgement, therapeutic communication, and organizational
skills. Qualities that may be different is more maturity, more
assertiveness, and more open to patient conversations than ever before. I
plan to meet the practicum experience with an open-mind, curiosity,
hard-work, organization , and an overall hope.
Two factors that may bar my success is stress and time.
Everything is so overwhelming at times We are all adult learnings with
responsibilities outside of school. As much as we prioritize of
learning, we bare the burden of family, kids, work etc. Another is
getting a second preceptor approved as the site schedule changed at the
last minute and will need to be with both. Two factors that will help me
overcome my barriers is my overall mental commitment to things I start.
I cannot stop something before finishing the end goal. Also, a huge
component to my ability to overcome barriers is my support system. They
are amazing and will push for me when I cant pull myself through the
program.
Discuss three resources will you use in the clinical setting to identify the most recent clinical practice guidelines.
During immersion weekend, I looked into lots of support for
the upcoming classes. I now use a clinical practice guidelines book.
When I go to practicum, I will take a brief moment to review patient
diagnosis in the clinical practice guidelines to make sure I am
approaching each patient and diagnosis appropriately. The pocket guide
workup book is a great resource to quickly search up important things to
rule out as well as review testing requirements. I will make sure the
clinical guidelines are most recent by looking at a publication within
the last five years, that there are peer reviews, and lastly that the
clinical practice guideline demonstrates a thorough and comprehensive
approach.
