About South Korea health policy
Comparing South Korea with the US politically, South Korea has a more recently formed democratic government than the United States. Its geopolitical environment is strongly shaped by its variable but often hostile relationship with North Korea, the only country with whom it shares a land border (Relations with the north, n.d.). There are tensions and concerns about nuclear weapons, which may have a negative effect on health. You mention high stress is a health problem in South Korea. Are you aware of the primary causes of stress?
According to your report, South Korea provides universal health coverage, with 97% of the population covered, compared with less than 90% in the US. The health conditions affecting its citizens are similar to those affecting Americans, namely high stress and depression, and in both countries people in the lower socio-economic demographics have lower quality of health. Did you notice any information reporting on South Koreans levels of satisfaction with healthcare available/received?
I personally agree with your recommendation that the government of South Korea should tax junk foods, sugary drinks like soda, and alcohol, items known to cause health problems and therefore healthcare costs, and use those resources for health insurance financing. I would add tobacco to that list. Rather than subsidizing production of sugar, corn, and beer, the government of the US would also do well to tax substances proven by decades of research to cause chronic health problems which lead to increased costs, morbidity, and mortality.
