Some people describe medical terminology as a “whole different language.” In the field of Allied Health there are many different specialties (Respiratory Therapy, Medical Technology, Paramedic Care, Dental Hygiene….) and each of these seems to have a language of its own. Several of you in this course this semester are from these fields. Other fields use specific medical and terminology that are critical to the understanding of the profession – including psychology, public health, forensics, veterinary science, dental hygiene, and more!
Initial Post: Please consider and discuss the following questions in your initial post
Part 1: Is there a practical reason for talking/speaking in ways that the general public (including our patients or clients) cannot understand? It is true that many medical terms are much more precise and descriptive. This does allow for better communication among practitioners. What implications does this have for patient care and interaction?
Part 2: In your specific field of practice* (Respiratory Therapitst), list and explain three terms or acronyms** that are used that folks who may be versed in general medical terms would not understand unless they were in your field. In your post, you should describe and define them in language understandable to those of us not working in your field. This may sound easy, but if you think hard enough you will likely think of some terms or concepts that are hard to explain to individuals outside your field. Write one short paragraph for each term/acronym:
Use each word in a sentence so that we could communicate effectively in your work environment. Specifically, pretend you are in a situation on the job in which you would need to use the word.
Additionally, give a logical reason (if one exists) why this term, phrase or acronym is superior to more common terminology. With some thought you will probably identify some that have no logical reason for use other than “tradition”.
Part 3 – Conclusion: Finally, give your rationale why all of this is (or is not) necessary. Why do we have to speak different languages? Note: although this discussion may not require in-depth research to formulate an answer, you should still provide us with a logical rationale (and citations, where appropriate) for your answers.
