Three primary types of variables used in nursing research are independent, dependent, and extraneous. In the independent variable, the researcher is required to work and manipulate to see if the dependent will change. For example, if a researcher wants to perform an experiment considering four people throwing a stone and they have not eaten in the last ten hours. In this example, the independent variable will be how it has been since they have not eaten. The dependent variable is the variable that the researcher is concerned with and it is affected by the independent variable. Regarding the above example, the dependent variable will be the person’s ability to throw the stone. The researcher will try to measure the change in stone-throwing as influenced by hunger. The extraneous variable is a variable that might affect the dependent variable but is not controlled by the researcher (MacLeod, 2019).
Extraneous variables are variables that are not the focus of a study but may affect the results. Researchers have attempted in controlling extraneous variables through randomizing them or holding them constant. Firstly, the researcher can control extraneous variables by holding them constant. This means that the values of the extraneous variables are not allowed to change during the study. For example, if a researcher is studying the effect of a new drug on blood pressure, they would hold the extraneous variables of diet and exercise constant by having all of the participants eat the same diet and follow the same exercise regimen during the study (Bhandari, 2021).
The second way to control extraneous variables is through randomizing them. This means that the values of the extraneous variables are assigned randomly to the different groups in the study. For example, if a researcher is studying the effect of a new drug on blood pressure, they would randomly assign some participants to take the drug and others to take a placebo. By doing this, the researcher can be confident that any differences in blood pressure between the two groups are due to the drug and not to other factors.
