Imagine you are working for an agency that screens clients who have been referred by either law enforcement or social services for concerns about their substance use. Review the fictional case presented below. Based on the case description, imagine how the client might answer the various screening inventories, and then prepare a report that summarizes the results for the AUDIT, CAGE, and DAST for the client. Research one additional assessment screening or measure to utilize with the case, providing your rationale for choosing that measure. Then, make general recommendations as to what should happen next for the client, including what treatment considerations seem appropriate in this case based on your results. At this point, treatment recommendations can be broad and general, as you will be exposed to more specific treatment planning in future weeks. In Week 7 of this course you prepare a thorough treatment plan for the case of Cristina
Fictional Case Scenario:
Cristina is a 32-year-old, single, Chinese-American, lesbian female who works for the county sheriffâs office. She has been on the force for 4 years. Cristina has been referred for evaluation and treatment through the employee assistance program (EAP) after receiving a DUI. Cristina has requested treatment through the EAP, which allows her to receive treatment services in lieu of termination, although she will have to complete any treatment recommended in order to retain her employment.
Cristina began drinking heavily when she attended the state university as an undergraduate. Studious and hyper-focused on academics in high school, Cristina found herself enjoying the frequent and ubiquitous parties she was exposed to in college. She received one underage citation in college, which was stricken from her record after completing an ARD program. She was not as academically successful as she or her family expected in college, but did graduate with a degree in criminal justice. After qualifying for law enforcement employment, Cristina found herself drinking fairly heavily again to cope with the stressors of working in law enforcement, finding it especially difficult to feel welcomed by colleagues as a female, ethnic-minority officer. Her drinking has caused other job issues prior to the DUI, including overuse of sick leave and excessive absences, and colleagues reporting their suspicion that Cristina is drinking on the job to superior officers.
Along with problematic alcohol use, Cristina has begun to experiment with cocaine use. She has found herself using cocaine to try and offset reduced energy and motivation at work, along with increases in lethargy, apathy, and hopelessness.
