Naturalistic Observation Assignment
Review the D’apice and colleagues (2019) article (A Naturalistic Home Observational Approach to Children’s Language, Cognition, and Behavior) Write a brief
one or two page summary of your own observational study that conducted with a child of any age (or their parent), including introduction, method, results and
discussion sections.
Introduction: When beginning a naturalistic observation, first determine the scope of the study by determining what you want to include in your research. Think of
as specific aspect of child development that you want to research (e.g., socialization, nature of play, misbehavior, acting out, language acquisition or use)!, then
describe in full what your expectations or hypotheses are. E.g., I expect that positive reinforcement will lead to better behavior.
Method: Select who to observe (e.g, a child, multiple children, or a specific parent’s behaviors), determine an observation time and place (e.g., to be observed in
a playground for 30 minutes) define all the terms that you will measure (e.g., define in specific terms the behavior you will measure), and collect your data (which
is often a tally of the number of times a behavior or set of behaviors did or did not occurs).
Select who you want to observe during your naturalistic observation. You may have a specific child that you’re conducting an observation on or you can select
random children in a public setting (e.g., a playground) or their parents Depending on the client you’re observing, choose an observation time where you can
easily observe them performing their daily behaviors and patterns. Try to choose a time where they will perform their normal behaviors. You want to be as
unobtrusive as possible so that the individuals do not know they are being observed. Make sure to define all the terms you use. For example, you may define
“good behavior” as being no incidences of hitting or yelling during play.
Then figure out how you will measure your data.
It may be the amount of times that there
is an incident of misbehavior or the amount of words spoken to a child during the observation period. Once you have planned all the details for your observation,
it’s time to collect your data.
