What is operations research?
“The use of quantitative tools and techniques, commonly known as operations
research, helps to incorporate a data-driven approach to making decisions”
(Langabeer & Helton, 2021, p. 109). Structure, decision-making, and
improvements are all forms of strategies that can be implemented during
operation research. In structure, methods will be used with rigor and
sophistication to solve the problem that is in place. “Decisions are defined as
a choice between two or more alternatives, and management decision-making is
the process in an organization by which decisions are made” (Langabeer &
Helton, 2021, p. 110). Per my research “data-driven decision making has its
roots in continuous improvement reforms that originated in management,
logistics, and organizational studies where the analysis of responses to
various forms of performance data was widely viewed as an essential component
of efficiency and productivity” (Hora & Smolarek, 2018, p. 556).
Improvements are reviewing problems, and situations, and making resolutions to
fix the issue that is happening.
What are the most common
operations research methods used in health care today? “Better understanding of
the organizational environment of the healthcare industry and the specifics of
the decision-making process can offer greater insight into how decisions are
made, what criteria are used, how the search for alternatives occurs”
(Langabeer & Helton, 2021, p. 110). Therefore, today in healthcare methods
like linear programming, risk and financial, simulation models, and revenue
cycle management are occurring. “Understanding the unique aspects of this
industry is important because they have been described as service-intensive and
goal-ambiguous in many respects” (Langabeer & Helton, 2021, p. 110).
However, everything refers to the objective of devising strategies to attain
what is planned out at the start. In the bible “better the poor whose walk is
blameless than a fool whose lips are perverse. Desire without knowledge is not
good how much more will hasty feet miss the way” (Proverbs 19:1-2, NIV). This
verse covers a lot for decision making, as a leader there will be a time to be
silent and a time a speak. If you are not speaking up when things are unclear,
that is a problem because not having the knowledge or understanding will have
your staff not ready for future developments.
Based
on your answer, chose one and describe a specific modern example. “Linear
programming is a mathematical technique designed to make decisions that
optimize trade-offs necessary for resource allocation” (Langabeer & Helton,
2021, p. 110). Overall, with this method, you would want to make sure you have
enough staff in the area to cover what needs to be completed day-to-day. Using
the linear programming method, you have a combination of things that will
either hinder or assist you in the process, including constraints and
simulation. Per my research “learning effect is a well-known phenomenon in
scheduling problems. In project scheduling, learning effect or learning curve
effect denotes a decrease in task durations by gaining experience due to
repetitive tasks” (Arik, 2019, p. 204). Managers will be able to use an
application that will assist with operating the constraints like hours,
capacity, employees, and patients. As the manager looks at this information, he
or she will be able to minimize labor costs during times in which a lot of
stuff is not needed. This is where the simulation will assist the manager with
making smart decisions making as it will predict the volume of the facility.
“For instance, a model of the emergency department can show patient flow and
movement if resources are changed, tasks are modified or realigned, or
variability in demand occurs” (Langabeer & Helton, 2021, p. 110). Providing
great customer service at the most demanded time makes the organization looks
well in the eyes of other.
