Middle-range theories in
nursing are ideas that are mainly focused on nursing knowledge to patients’
health. The theories primarily support the nursing practice since they help research
and fulfill the nursing objective, which is advanced healthcare service to
patients. Middle-range theories fulfill different disciplines in the nursing
practice. The middle-range theories mainly originate from research work or the
nursing practice (Kaidesoja, 2019). Due to the high number of middle-range
theories developed every day, assessing a theory is crucial to determine the
theories that can be documented and used in books. Therefore, one way of
evaluating middle-range theories is through internal and external criticism.
The internal and external criticism criteria provide a method
for evaluating middle-range theories focus on the idea of analysis of different
middle-range theories by considering how the nursing discipline perceives the
theory and how it affects people. The relationship such approaches cause
between the caregivers and the patient (Najeh Alharbi & Ghazi Baker, 2020).
Internal and external criticism of ideas as a way of evaluation focuses on how
clear the theory is and its benefits to the nursing career. The use of internal
and external criticism requires that all the constituents of the ideas are well
determined and how they relate to the lead to the development of a better
relationship to the health services provided through nursing.
Internal criticism is the internal buildup of a theory and its
consistent components in fulfilling the aim it was developed for. Internal
criticism focuses on whether the theory is robust and ore clear to the
objectives of the nursing discipline. Internal criticism significantly weighs
the foundation of the theory, whether the approach consists of logic or if the
theory shows consistency in the development and explanation of the theory
(Najeh Alharbi & Ghazi Baker, 2020). Also, through internal criticism, the
theory is evaluated if it shows any consideration of the subject of the work
being portrayed. Through internal criticism, the nursing theories are
considered based on the arguments projected and if the theory also appreciates
other previous research done.
External criticism as criteria of middle-range theory evaluation
focuses on the relationship a theory has to people and the nursing discipline.
External criticism also evaluates how middle-range theories in nursing related
to the world’s logical concepts. External criticisms mainly focus on how
complex a theory is and the ease of comprehending the theory concerning the
function of the health service providence and the quality of the health
theories.
