Each of these patients had a fight in the courts over the right to die to leave family, friends and unknown persons reeling at the thought that they might lose a loved one to self-directed euthanasia, or worse yet that when staring down terminal illness they might choose the option for themselves.
In 2016 California became the 5th state in the nation to establish a law allowing patients, who met very specific requirements, to end their lives. In the eyes of many medical providers end of life, options have pushed the ethical envelope, challenging the Hippocratic Oath which states âI will not administer poison to anyone when asked to do so, nor suggest such a courseâ (National Library of Medicine). On the other side are the patients and families of terminally ill patients who want the right to make the choice of ending life on their own terms.
In this activity your instructor will discuss end of life issues present in healthcare today, noting specific state laws regulating this time. As a class, you will identify States with current legislation allowing end of life options, and the qualifications a patient must meet to request these services.
