(Week #4 Reflective Activity #2): (750-1000 words)-There are two sections to this week’s reflective paper. For section one, you will reflect about positive psychology. It is a concept that has gained a lot of support in recent years. Review information from chapter nine in the text about Abraham Maslowâs ideas about âpeak experiencesâ and Martin Seligmanâs PERMA Model. You will also view the weekâs videos above about PERMA and peak experiences as well as the video about the book entitled The How of Happiness. After watching the three videos, and conducting additional research about peak experiences and PERMA, reflect on that information. What did you learn from each of the three videos? How can you implement these concepts into your own life? Specifically, reflect on what peak experiences you may already have had in life and how those experiences may have helped you to elevate your overall happiness and self-fulfillment. What future peak experiences might you intentionally practice to help with your personal levels of happiness and contentment? Additionally, what are some specific PERMA examples of activities that you can practice to help you flourish? What are your overall reactions and thoughts to positive psychology and such concepts as peak experiences and the PERMA Model? Compose section one of this paper in approximately 400-500 words.
For section two, this week you will engage in a positive psychology activity which hopefully will enhance your overall level of happiness and optimism, especially during these challenging times we are all experiencing. For the activity, you should compose a letter, handwritten or typed, to someone who has greatly impacted your life in a positive manner. While close family members and friends immediately come to mind, I encourage you to write to someone who you have not seen or communicated with for some time or who would be totally surprised to hear from you (former teacher; former coach; clergy member; boss/co-worker; academic advisor; distant relative; high school friend; etc.). In your letter, thank the person for his/her support and encouragement.
After composing the letter, you should deliver/send the letter to the person. Ideally, a surprise, unexpected face-to-face in-person visit would be best. To make this activity even more special and unique, people sometimes even buy an affordable frame and place the letter in the frame when delivering it. However, with our pandemic challenges, and/or if your schedule or geography does not allow for such a visit, you may e-mail the letter and then schedule a virtual visit (skype, zoom, face time, etc.) or a phone call to chat with the other person.
You do not need to include your actual letter for this assignment, but rather, reflect upon this experience in approximately 350-500 words. What emotions did you experience when composing the gratitude letter? Why are you grateful for that person? Reflect upon the gratitude visit and the emotions you and the other person experienced. How did this activity assist you this week with your levels of positivity and happiness? How does this activity connect with this week’s concepts related to the field of positive psychology? Refer to the syllabus for grading criteria. The paper may be submitted via this link anytime between 12:30 am on June 6 but before 11:59 pm on June 12.
