Attraction can work in many ways: it can be from a glance (love at first sight, at some call it) or it can develop with an unlikely person over the course of time. Many factors influence whom people are attracted to. They include physical attractiveness, proximity, similarity, and reciprocity.
One powerful predictor of whether any two people are friends is sheer proximity (Myers, 2018). One of the reasons why proximity matters to attraction is that it breeds familiarity; people are more attracted to that which is familiar. Friends tend to be similar on many characteristics, including personality traits.
