Advancing technology also means advancing threats. As Healthcare Administrators, privacy is one of our primary duties. This includes privacy of patient information, the privacy of company files and cloud-based files, protection against hackers and other intruders such as viruses, and unintended leaks of data and information. There are two rules within the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996: Privacy Rule (December 2000, 2002) and Security Rule (February, 2003). These two rules set national standards for the protection of identifiable health information, confidentiality, integrity, and availability of protected health information. However, even with these rules, the news is flooded with issues of compromise and breach on a daily basis. For this discussion, you will visit the Healthcare IT News website (http://www.healthcareitnews.com/news) and find an article that focuses on some sort of privacy breach.
