Debate the ability of a public health campaign to achieve social marketing goals without using social media.
For this weekâs discussion, I decided to use the campaign from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, âPhysical Activity. The Arthritis Pain Reliever,â promoting physical activity as a method of arthritis prevention. According to the CDC website, the campaignâs target audience is people with arthritis who are 40 to 65 years old, and was âdesigned to appeal to Caucasians and African Americans with less than a college education, and income under $75,000 per yearâ (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018).
The campaign overview states that the available campaign materials include, âradio spots, billboards, bus shelter placards, brochures, print ads, flyers and social media materialsâ (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018), but doesnât specify which social media sites will be used or how they are intended to be used in the campaign. Being that the campaign is targeted towards people who aged 40 to 65 years old, I would suggest that the campaign focus their promotional materials on the platforms of YouTube and Facebook. According to a study of social media use in 2021 conducted by the Pew Research Center using 1,502 American citizens, 91% of surveyed adults between 30 to 49, and 83% of surveyed adults between 50 and 64 prevalent the YouTube platform; and similarly, 77% of those 30 to 49, and 73% of those 50 to 64 use Facebook. The campaign overview indicates that a preparation of tv ads that could be more beneficial to the campaign if they were refitted and/or reworked for YouTube to accommodate the significant portion of their intended age demographic that uses the platform. Also, Facebook is a platform that has long benefited from the usage of ads on their site, so I believe that the platform could also benefit from turning some of the flyers and print ads into digital format for use on Facebook to further use social media materials to spread the intended awareness.
