After viewing this 43-minute video, Using Prisoners as Research Subjects, please respond to all of the following questions in this Discussion Board:
1. Dr. Kligman conducted experiments on humans who were in prison. Discuss in detail one of the ethical principles from the textbook relevant to this situation.
2. This is a one-sided, biased story of abuse, moral indifference and greed. There is always the other side. As a nurse who understands the parts of a research study and the related research ethics, what further information would you like to know to make an impartial and fair-minded decision about this ethical situation?
3. When conducting research on human subjects, there are always risks and benefits. Can you imagine a time in which yourself or a family member might choose to take part in an experimental treatment for which the risks/benefits are not known? Put yourself into that person’s shoes and describe your feelings in one paragraph. 4. In your opinion, should prisoners now be allowed to become research subjects while in prison? A) Why, and B) why not? (Be sure to fully discuss both aspects.)
One (1) primary response and at least two (2) secondary responses are expected from each student for this individual assignment. Responses are defined as scholarly writing in response to the posted prompt on the Discussion Board. Since this is a research course, students should support opinions and original thought with evidence from contemporary literature, including nursing literature, not just references from the textbook and the film. Students will synthesize information related to course readings and research, present their ideas, and continue the discussion with thoughtful new contributions. Netiquette is observed. Each student will post the primary response to the Discussion Board by Wednesday at 11:59 pm of Week 4. During the week, each student will post two (2) secondary responses to other students’ postings to the Discussion Board by Sunday at 11:59 pm of Week 4. These secondary responses may include answers to questions posted by other students, respectful comments to other postings, or information related to these ethical issues. Student’s postings will be graded as described in Discussion Board participation in the syllabus and rubric, which includes correct grammar and references to course readings, APA citation of additional current scholarly nursing journals referred to in the post, and/or external scholarly links. Include three (3) references for the initial Discussion Board post (you may reference this film, but this does not count toward your 3 references), and at least one (1) reference in your secondary responses.
Late initial postings will have a 5-point deduction per day. If not submitted by the due date, the assignment will be graded with a zero. Discussion Board assignments cannot be made up after the due date. Writing style, formatting, and proper grammar are important.
