As stated in section 1.2 of Psychology and Climate Change; Human Perceptions, Impacts, and Responses, “educating people about climate change does not necessarily change their opinions or lead them to greater concern; and paying for sustainable behaviors is generally not the best way to encourage behavior change”. Knowing this, what are some strategies that we can employ to encourage people to take action to address climate change?
1. Section 2.3 of Psychology and Climate Change; Human Perceptions, Impacts, and Responses Identifies four indicative time periods during which public perceptions of climate change has shifted. For example, in the 1980s to the early 1990s, awareness and knowledge about climate change increased. In the mid 1990s to the mid 2000s, there was a “sustained overall growth of public concern”. However, in the mid 2000s, more skepticism and concern associated with climate change began to build. Despite the growing scientific consensus on climate change issues, the skepticism associated with climate change has only grown more intensely since the 1980s. Why do you feel skepticism has increased around climate change despite strong scientific evidence of environmental impacts of global warming?
