Curriculum Analysis
For this week’s project, you will continue to build on your analysis of your prelicensure program.
Submit a scholarly paper that analyzes the nursing curriculum from your prelicensure program and how it demonstrates adherence to its accreditation standards (e.g., AACN or CCNE, ACEN, CNEA).
First, you will need to determine the nursing accrediting body for your institution. Next, you will want to reference the nursing standards (or Essentials, if AACN) of the accrediting body (read the entire standard, not just the title). Lastly, you need to compare the nursing curriculum from your school to the accreditation standards (dig deep in the accreditation standards because this is where you will find what content needs to be taught in a nursing program). Once you have reviewed the accreditation standards and the curriculum, include the following in your paper:
Introduction: Briefly describe the mission statement and how it drives the curriculum in your program.
Body (paragraphs 2–6): Address the following:
List the admission requirements for the program. Is there a correlation between the admission requirements and the mission statement?
Describe the correlation of admission requirements and student success. If there are required entrance exams (there usually are), explain the type of test and the rationale for pre-admission testing.
Are there prerequisites? If so, what is the rationale for prerequisites?
List out the standards (or Essentials) of the accrediting body. Match each nursing standard with the course from the curriculum that teaches the correlating content (one course may meet a few standards, or multiple courses may meet one standard).
What are the clinical requirements of the accrediting body? How does your program meet the clinical requirements? Is simulation permitted by the accrediting body in lieu of hospital clinical hours?
Summary: Lastly, go to the school’s board of nursing Web site and find out what the most recent NCLEX pass rates are. Review the pass rate in relation to the curriculum and accreditation standards. Keep in mind that although there are many variables that impact the NCLEX pass rate, a strong curriculum is the most significant driver of student success. As a new nurse educator, do you see anything lacking in the curriculum that might boost the pass rate? Alternatively, do you see evidence of a strong or unique curricular approach that is resulting in high pass rates?
