APPLYING PERSONALITY THEORIES TO TV CHARACTERS
Think of a potentially interesting TV character to focus on (perhaps a favorite character, or one with a particularly vivid or unique personality). After selecting a character, focus on a specific episode of the TV show that features that character. Then, write a short (2 to 3-page) essay in which you first briefly describe the circumstances and plot of the episode, and then devote the remainder of their essay to explaining that character’s behavior in terms of one of the major personality theories (i.e., psychodynamic, humanistic, trait, or cognitive social-learning). Other guidelines (a) you can use more than one theoretical approach if they’d like, (b) You are not restricted to characters with negative or maladaptive personalities (i.e., “healthy” characters can be interesting, too), and (c) feel free to be creative and original in your application of the theory.
SAMPLE
I would pick the character Walter White from Breaking Bad and discuss his motivational forces behind him transforming from a high school chemistry teacher to the biggest meth producer in New Mexico. He struggles between the two personalities throughout the series. On one hand he is cold and calculating and on the other hand he is a loving father (he is doing this for his family). Sometimes I think he leans on the sociopath spectrum- I would follow the psychodynamic theory which would allow me to take a look at his upbringing…Are there some unresolved issued not dealt with that caused his personality/character to change so drastically….I would also incorporate the cognitive social learning theory to see if he was trying to mimic a behavior he found attractive and resourceful to provide for his family…….
You need to include an episode of your identified behavior in your paper……..if there is a YouTube for it, include it in the paper for me to watch…….
Hopefully this will get you started.
Whatever theory you use, make sure you define the theory so it’s clear how you are connecting it to the series. When using outside sources, make sure to give them credit (APA style) at the end of the paper with a cited page.
