1. Provide an analysis of this topic. Analysis Imposter phenomenon can be defined as an individual believing others have inflated perceptions of them and their abilities and have a strong fear of being evaluated and deemed an imposter (Mak, et al., 2019). These individuals believe they achieved this amount of success by luck instead of genuine knowledge and skill. This fear can continue despite ongoing success and even when praised for their achievements, these individuals believe it’s due to external factors (Mak, et al., 2019). Three key attributes have been identified for the imposter phenomenon–the sense of being a fraud, fear of being discovered, and difficulty internalizing success while behaving in ways that maintain these beliefs (Mak, et al., 2019). Our text talks about three phases after becoming an APRN. Phase 1 is the orientation phase, 2 is the frustration phase, and 3 is the implementation phase. The imposter phenomenon is included in phase 2, the frustration phase. According to our text, this phase, or stage, includes frustration, feelings of inadequacy, conflict, and anxiety (Tracy & O’Grady, 2019). It is also stated that this phase may come and go and cross over other phases. Helpful strategies to overcome these feelings may be to meet with peers or administrators monthly to assess and share concerns, focusing on short-term, realistic goals, and role clarification (Tracy & O’Grady, 2019). 2. Do you think it could happen to you? Why or why not? How will the understanding of IP help you move from the RN to an Advanced Practice role more smoothly? Reflection I wholeheartedly believe this can happen to me, in fact, it already has. As a new grad RN, I was hired into one our busiest and most challenging emergency departments, I suffered from imposter syndrome for a very long time and even still experience those feelings from time to time. I think in order to have a smooth transition from RN to APRN it will be important to remember this happens to a lot of people, if not most and I went to school and prepared for this moment. I will need to remember I have the tools to succeed and that I can always go to my peers and mentors to express concerns and frustrations. References Mak, K. K., Kleitman, S., & Abbott, M. J. (2019).
