Assessing participants before, during, and after participation in a fitness program is important for several reasons:
To assess current fitness levels (both strengths and weaknesses)
To identify special needs for individualized coaching
To evaluate progress
To motivate and educate
Once a participant is ready to begin his or her fitness assessments, he or she should prepare by wearing fitness attire; avoid eating or drinking 2â3 hours before the assessment; avoid alcohol, tobacco, and coffee for at least 3 hours; avoid exercise the day of the assessments; and try to get a good nightâs sleep the night before.
The order of the assessments is important. A proper fitness assessment should begin with 1) a measure of body composition, 2) a cardiorespiratory assessment, 3) a muscular endurance assessment, and then 4) a flexibility test.
At the completion of the assessments, the participantâs fitness results are evaluated relative to age and gender norms. With the necessary information in hand, an appropriate fitness program can be developed for improving the participantâs health and fitness in relation to his or her present health status and personal fitness goals.
