ASSESSMENT ITEM 3: CASE STUDY Aligned subject learning
outcomes • Describe the theoretical origins and concepts underpinning current approaches of
counselling and their application to the guidance and counselling field, including career
development. This includes relating this foundational knowledge to the tropics,
sustainability, and Indigenous, rural and regional wellbeing. • Apply problem-solving skills and develop solutions to a range of guidance and counselling
contexts. • Evaluate counselling therapies and begin to formulate an integrated personal theory of
counselling. • Communicate, evaluate and justify complex ideas and professional judgements to both
specialist and non-specialist stakeholders. Task Length 2,000 words, excluding references, reference list, headings, tables and figures.
ASSESSMENT ITEM 3: DESCRIPTION The purpose of this task is for you to demonstrate an understanding of integrative therapy, which
involves combining two therapies to provide the best possible care to the client. Examine the two
hypothetical scenarios below and choose ONE client for this task. Identify two therapies that could be
combined into an integrative approach to benefit your chosen client. In developing your integrative approach, you should seek to support your decisions with evidence from
the literature. The research you cite should be centred on how the therapies are beneficial to clients
with similar problems as those described below as well as how your chosen integration has been
successfully deployed in the past. Case Study #1:
Saskia is a 15-year-old girl from Nepal who was adopted as an infant by Australian parents. Her parents
are religious ministers in a regional community in Queensland. Her parents are very well known in the
community where Saskia attends the local public school. Saskia’s demeanour has been generally positive
and bubbly, however she has become sullener and quieter over the past three months.
Her pastoral care teacher has asked Saskia about her change in mood, and she has revealed that her
parents are considering moving to Nepal to become missionaries. Saskia is experiencing anxiety about
the potential move, and she is especially nervous about potentially meeting her birth parents or their
family. In addition to this, Saskia is also feeling upset about losing her friends in her home community.
She was bullied throughout primary school for being adopted but the transition into a larger high school
has benefitted her as she has developed a larger friend network.
Saskia’s favourite subjects are English, Drama and Physical Education. Outside of school, Saskia enjoys
socialising with her friends and plays netball. She has one younger brother who is the biological child of
her parents. As her parents are religious leaders, she is actively involved in the community and also
volunteers her time with a soup kitchen and charity store.
A suggested structure for your case study is as follows: • Introduction • Client Needs • Therapy #1 – Brief history of chosen therapy – Justification for therapy from Evidence-based Practice • Therapy #2 – Brief history of chosen therapy – Justification for therapy from Evidence-based Practice • Model for Integration • Potential Outcomes • Conclusion • Reference List Assessment criteria
You will be assessed on your ability to:
1. Identify and explain the needs of the client, taking into consideration the clients’ context 2. Accurately describe the history of the chosen therapies
3. Justify the two therapies chosen for integration based on the clients context and goals 4. Synthesise evidence to support claims and arguments, using APA 7th referencing and reference
list 5. Present the case study for a professional audience, ensuring accurate grammar, spelling and
formatting of the document.
