In particular, the pending research revolves around the hypothesis that leadership competencies are critical in effectively managing diabetes mellitus patients. Relatedly, the research aims to question where leadership skills are learned, requisite leadership competencies for nurse leaders, and role of nurse leaders in managing diabetes mellitus. Based on this research problem and course readings, a mixed method approach is the applicable.
Comprehensive research findings will demand both qualitative and quantitative aspects. The research problem is predominantly qualitative because it aims to assess views regarding the roles of nurse leaders and the needed nurse leadership skills. The leadership skills may vary between different participants, requiring a qualitative approach in collecting data. For example, the researcher can utilize open-ended questioning on individual nurse leaders or within focus groups and consequently conduct content analysis to achieve key leadership themes or skills (Flynn & Korcuska, 2018). Even though the study is mainly qualitative, one cannot overlook the relevance of quantitative findings when comparing opinions on close ended questions that could arise when exploring if nurse leadership skills are acquired in school or through experiences. In such contexts, structured surveys can facilitate quantitative analysis (Gupta & Keuskamp, 2018). Therefore, a mixed methods approach is a suitable study approach.
The research problem demands integrating a mixed method research approach. Descriptive qualitative methodologies will facilitate content or narrative analysis. Such qualitative analysis will help acquire comprehensive insights on the role of nurse leaders and necessary leadership competencies. On the other hand, quantitative synthesis will facilitate empirical evidence regarding the source of nurse leadership skills. The study will benefit from the extensive and contextualized insights of qualitative synthesis and the evidence-based reliable and generalizable findings of quantitative synthesis.
