Case B:
This case relates to a 50 year old female with a history of
hyperlipidaemia and alcoholism. The patient underwent bilateral hip
arthroplasty for the treatment of osteonecrosis of the hip.
The patient has been immobile during a prolonged period leading up to
their surgery and has been inactive post-surgery. Whilst recovering in
the days post-surgery, the patient develops abrupt chest pain,
dyspnoea, tachycardia and a cough. This has raised concerns of a
pulmonary embolism.

It should discuss the pathophysiology, the role of imaging and consider the relevance of the patient’s
history and presentation using evidence to support your work.
Suggestion:
A dedicated section on the pathophysiology, and relevance of patient presentation, any risks and
links followed by another section focusing on the role of imaging would be well suited for this
assignment.
The role of imaging should include the role of relevant imaging modalities along with the patient’s
pathway/how it fits into the patient’s management
