Case Study: You are working in the emergency department when a 15-year-old female presents with obvious bruising of the face and upper extremities. She is crying and reports that her boyfriend punched her in the face and grabbed her by the arms last night during a fight they had.
What are your priority actions?
What anticipatory guidance should the nurse provide to this client regarding intimate partner violence?
Being a mandated reporter, who should the nurse notify regarding this incident?
What support is available for this client after discharge from the emergency room?

Our priority action is to establish the client’s safety and also asking her if she feels safe at home. We realize that patients may decline to report the abuse for various reasons such as distrusting law enforcement, financial reasons, or hope that the behaviors will change. We can offer guidance to the client by listening to her story, and then providing information on referrals and support groups. Nurses should remain non-judgmental and reassure the client that we will help regardless if she should choose to stay in the relationship. As mandated reporters, nurses are required to report the incident since she is a minor to the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is a great resource to give to the client should she need assistance after leaving the emergency room. Social services can also become involved to make the client aware of any programs in her community that are available.
