The above paper uses the example of the 2014 Flint, Michigan water crisis as a framework for examining factors which contributed to Flint water supply contamination by lead and other contaminants. Serious adverse health consequences resulted from residents’ exposure to contaminants via their drinking water. Because Flint’s urban population is almost 60% African American with 40% of the population living below the poverty line, the author states that the Flint water crisis is an environmental justice issue.
