(Reflection Papers Instructions and Grading Rubric
Instructions:
During week 8 and week 16 you will submit a Reflection Paper. For each paper you will select a podcast episode to listen to from The Happiness Lab with Dr. Laurie Santos found at this website: https://www.happinesslab.fm/ (Links to an external site.)
Along with an APA formatted title page and references page, your paper should also contain the following sections:
Introduction: Introduce your paper topic stating the season, and episode including the title of the podcast that you listened to, and briefly explain why you chose this podcast (4-6 sentence paragraph).
Summarize and Synthesize: For This Reflection Paper 2, you will relate 4-6 concepts/theories/topics from chapters 7-12(TEXTBOOK ATTCHED). In your paper, please italicize the specific concepts/theories/topics that you relate from the text (2 full pages).
IMPORTANT NOTE: I will be looking for evidence of critical thought and depth of processing as you relate key points to specific points in the text. For example: âThe author described how the participants seemed to gravitate back to their original level of happiness. This relates to the idea of happiness set point.â [this example does not explain the idea of happiness set point as described by the text, so this example is insufficient]. Here is an example of acceptable synthesis: âIn the study described in the podcast, the researcher split the participants into two groups. In the first group, all the participants had experienced a traumatic event and the second group had not experienced any traumatic events. In both groups, the researcher assessed the participantsâ levels of happiness and both groups seemed to score similarly in happiness levels after 6 months. The results of the study relate to the happiness set point theory described by Compton and Hoffman (2020) which explains that genetically, humans are predisposed to have an average level of happiness after temporary highs and lows. This means that even after experiencing extremes in emotions, perhaps triggered by trauma, humansâ happiness levels tend to level out.â [Notice the difference between a surface explanation (in the first example) and one that demonstrates critical thinking and a detailed explanation (in the second example).] Also notice that no direct quotes are used to carry the main points. Please avoid using direct quotes. Rather, use your own words to demonstrate your clear understanding of the major points and conclusions.
Application: Apply what you learned from this episode into your life personally or to life in general. Explain how you can or cannot use this information in your life moving forward (1-2 full pages).
ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTE: Please use boldface for each section header (Introduction, Summarize and Synthesize, Application). Follow the formatted example Download formatted exampleprovided.
