My Proposal: Although there can be adjustments, I’d like to focus my term paper on psychological strategies that can help induce a positive change in perspective particularly geared toward white Americans with high socioeconomic status to combat conflicts that we discussed in class (such as group threat and the inability to perceive an outgroup perspective) to create a shift in an overall societal perspective. Specifically, I was thinking of diving even deeper into the Martha/Mr. Gremling situation (“The Atlantic by Clint Smith) and providing interpersonal strategies to combat perspectives similar to Mr. Gremling’s. It is fascinating to me to formulate strategies that’ll resonate with an individual with such a uniquely biased perspective because if we can successfully convince the leader of the Confederacy to value opposing perspectives, we can convince anyone in the world. The strategy that I’d like to lead my argument into is the idea of instilling a sense of oneness and relationship that becomes close enough to influence that shift in perspective. I will propose the struggles we must be aware of in persuading a person like Mr. Gremling (e.g., group threat, wrongful perspective reinforced by material gain, power dynamic, etc.) and then present solutions to these struggles (e.g., signaling that “I am one of you,” redirecting negative emotional reactions into positive change, suggesting that this change can result in even greater material gain, using his leadership to do something bigger than himself) and then appropriate ways to carry out respective solutions (e.g., different approaches to stroke the ego to our benefit, articulating verbiage that will resonate effectively, etc).
