Discussion Board #3: Critically Reading a Research Article.
An empirical research article is a report of a study in which data were gathered to help answer a research question. Research articles are typically comprised of five major elements or sections: abstract, introduction, method, results, and discussion. Pages 28-30 of your text provides a brief description of the content associated with each of these sections. Step 2: Review the article that you were assigned and answer the 6 questions below. I don’t expect pages-upon-pages of writing, but I do expect a thorough response. Do your best to respond to each question in at least three to four sentences. Focusing on the article that you were assigned (based on last name, see above), number each of your responses so you don’t forget to address each question.
The introduction is the text that begins immediately after the abstract (i.e., article synopsis) and continues until the next section. In the introduction, you will find the literature review, hypothesis or purpose of the study.
What is the purpose of this study? What are the central predictions being made? The method section describes the participants and procedures.
Describe the participants. In other words, who participated in the study? How were differences in sexual jealousy measured? The results section presents the details of the statistical analysis.
Were the predictions supported by the data?
The discussion (i.e., conclusion) section typically begins by summarizing the results of the study, stating the conclusions, and noting any potential applications.
What conclusions can be drawn?
