QUESTION 1: choose one question to amswer
1. Consider an older adult with whom you are familiar when answering this question. Ideally, the person will be over 65 but someone over 40 would likely work as well. Provide a brief introduction to the person (feel free to use a pseudonym for anonymity if you desire) and identify 4 sources of change that likely influenced their development. Identify if these sources are normative age-graded, normative history-graded, or non-normative life events.
2. This chapter introduced you to several ways that we can define aging (Chronological, Psychological, Social, and Biological). Select someone famous or someone in your personal life to describe using chronological age and what you know about them. Then choose at least one of the other ways to measure age to describe the individual. You might not be able to give a number age, but you could describe them as young/old on that dimension when compared to chronological age. For example, Betty White would likely be thought of by many as socially young. She turned 99 in January 2021 but her personality and actions are often associated with people much younger than that. You could pick some examples to use to demonstrate why the person you are using may be older or younger socially, psychologically, or biologically than their chronological age.
For either #1 or #2, describe the person and use a quote/reference from the textbook to connect to what you are writing. The citation should not just be a generic citation of the textbook but instead should incorporate some specific part of the reading to reference.
QUESTION 2
Description:
The beginning of Chapter 2 talks about various theories of aging. These theories have prompted some biologists to wonder if aging is, indeed, an unavoidable part of life (as most of us assume), or if the biological changes could be slowed/altered/eliminated. Others then ask, is this idea reasonable?
Before answering this discussion post, watch this 16-minute TED talk that explains one way scientists are considering how we could “cure” aging: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCCdmGKtxPA. There is also a PDF of a chapter from a Taking Sides book that also tries to explain this debate – one article being more supportive of the idea and another article being more skeptical of such an idea.
Once you’ve read and considered this information, write a discussion board post that answers the following questions:
1. Why do you think people are eager to live longer and accept the current understanding of limits of the human lifespan?
2. If this anti-aging movement were to succeed, what would you anticipate might be the result? In the PDF reading it notes that there isn’t a way to fully know the impacts (positive or negative) of increasing the lifespan. What issues do you hypothesize could occur?
3. Overall, are you supportive of this idea? Why or why not, or to what extent?
Once you’ve posted, be sure to respond to the person who has posted before you. How is that response different from your own and how does that further impact your thinking about the idea? Be sure in both your original post and your response post to cite back to some information in the textbook, PDF reading, or TED talk.
Question 3
Instructions: Find 2 products marketed toward older adults (NOT medication). Describe the product and include a link or picture of it in your response. Then consider the product from the perspective of the personal health and physical changes discussed in Chapter 2 or 3 – which of these changes is the product meant to help or counteract? Most products are marketed to older adults to counteract or help with some of the changes noted in this chapter, so describe the product and explain which changes it is meant to assist or counteract.
In a second paragraph, consider if there are barriers to someone using or being able to use the product and what those barriers might be. Finally, note if you know anyone who has used the product or something similar and your reaction to there being such a product (good or bad).
RUBRIC:
Up to 10 points per product (20 points total)
2 points for the link or picture of product
3 points for the description/ purpose of product and what changes it is meant to assist
3 points for barrier consideration
2 points for your own experience/ideas about the overall practicality or purpose of the product
Question 4 : choose one question
There are 3 choices for this week’s discussion board post. Be sure to clearly indicate which choice you are answering. In your response, remember to relate something back to the textbook with a citation and once you have posted, respond to the person who posted before you. In your peer response, remember you also need to tie something back to the book with a citation.
CHOICE 1: In Chapter 6, the Convoy Model is introduced. Describe a person in your life that would be in your inner, middle, and outer circle. Describe how some of your relationships (with these people or others) have changed in the last 5 years and how you think they might change in the upcoming 5 years.
CHOICE 2: In Chapter 6, Attachment theory as it relates to adults is introduced and discussed. Reflect on your attachment relationship with your parents. What sort of an attachment would you say you have with them and how do you think that influences your relationships with other people?
CHOICE 3: (Chapter 5) Discuss some of the transitions and social roles you have experienced in the last few years. What transitions do you expect you may face in the upcoming 5 years? What sort of adaptations have the transitions required (or may require for future transitions) and why?
Question 5
Before engaging with this week’s discussion post, watch the following YouTube videos:
1. Featuring Waldo McBurney, America’s Oldest Worker in 2006. Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAgrjuAYnWc. Article: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/americas-oldest-worker-has-a-sweet-life/. (3 minutes).
2. Illinois farmer on the Tonight Show in 1987: (15 minutes) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1t8-x3uOSqY. (CC available on the video)
In each video, the individuals reference work as an important part of their lives even in late adulthood. Write a paragraph that relates something from one of these videos to this week’s lesson (or even an earlier chapter if you wish), and comment on your reaction to these. Is this at all like what you see in your own career/work trajectory as you are embarking on it early on, or maybe a second career path? Why or why not, and if there are differences, what variables would you attribute that to?
For full-credit consideration – Remember to include a citation from the textbook in your own post. Then be sure to respond to the peer who posted before you and connect something they said to the textbook with a citation.
