1. When looking at the cultural differences surrounding eating disorders,
the values of a culture must be looked at. In one culture an individual
that is obese may be considered to be ugly and unhealthy. In a separate
culture an obese individual may be representative of their economic
standing. With women specifically, their weight may also be indicative
of how a society views how fertile they may be. What is beautiful in one
culture is not always globally accepted (Farreras, 2022). In many
cultures however, a thinner person is considered to be more attractive
and healthier than an overweight person. This sort of social norms and
standard of belief can directly contribute to eating disorders among
people.

2. “Hikikomori is a psychopathological and social syndrome
characterized by a complete withdrawal from society for
at least six months, lack of interest or willingness to
attend
school/work, and lack of interest in personal relationships.” This
syndrome is theorized to be brought on by the emerging changes of
technology and new methods of communication, changes in social structure
in this new age, values and traditions changing, and unemployment
rates. These changes can bring on a change in social engagement and
because those affected by it to disengage from society. A link between
internet addiction and HS (Hikikomori) is theorized. Reason being that
many people who suffer from HS spend most of their time on the internet
rather than engaging socially with others. However, those with HS may
see the internet to socialize and connect wit others, as well as connect
with others who have HS. So, the internet can be a cause but also be an
escape for those with HS.
