Essay 1. What adult (parental) behaviors are consistent with a preformationist approach to child development? How do these contribute to dysfunctional growth, maturation, and psychology? By logical extension, and to the extent that preformationism is an attitude that can also be projected toward other adults, what practices, ideas, or beliefs during the enslavement of African peoples in the Americas qualify as preformationist thinking and actions? Why?
Essay 2. Compare and contrast Kurt Goldstein’s work on motivational factors and Abraham Maslow’s co-opted and revised rendition as a “pyramid of needs.” A distinguishing difference to be elaborated upon is the fact that Goldstein’s original work places “self-actualization” as a universal, organismic (biological) tendency driving all other needs, whereas Maslow’s revision locates it on top of a pyramid. In your answer, explain Goldstein’s thinking on why motivational factors should not be strictly hierarchical. Finally, draw a parallel between Goldstein’s work and S. Freud’s original description and stratification of “personality” – look for commonalities and differences.
